Extracted images vs page pictures
Extraction returns the actual image files stored inside the PDF, at the resolution the author put in — if a photo was placed small on the page but stored at 3000px, you get the 3000px original. That is different from our PDF to Image tool, which photographs whole pages. One honest note: extracted images are re-saved as PNG files. PNG is lossless, so no quality is lost, but a photo that was stored as a compact JPEG may come out as a larger PNG file — the pixels are identical, the container is just less compressed. Scanned documents usually contain one big image per page (the scan itself), which this tool will happily return as well.
Frequently Asked Questions
It found no images, but I can see pictures in the PDF.
Those pictures are probably part of a scanned page image or drawn as vector shapes, not stored as separate images. PDF to Image (whole pages) will capture how they look.
Why is an extracted photo bigger in MB than expected?
It was likely stored as JPEG inside the PDF and is re-saved as lossless PNG. The quality is unchanged; use an image compressor if you need it small again.
